The First Run Of 2024

May 2, 2024
Well it finally happened. A Bike Night in Kingston at Ole Savanah restaurant. The temperature was in the upper 70's and the skies were a lovely blue making it a great night for a gathering. When I heard that the event was taking place I pondered for a few days which bike to take. The Kawasaki won the drawing and justified its choice with perfect behavior on the trip there and back. Even more so as I crossed the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge. The American flag on the bridge was flying straight without slack as the breezes blew fairly strong. If I had been on one of the lighter bikes it would have been a struggle as they get pushed around easily going across. The Kawasaki, at 550 pounds, barely feels the wind. I gave it a pat on the gas tank after we went across to thank it for the easy ride.
When I arrived Ole Savanah was jumping with a large collection of motorcycles and people. They were also offering free appetizers which were delicious so the mood was quite happy. People were talking, music was playing and the sound of new arrivals on Big V-Twins filled the air.

I only hung around for a half hour as I had other things to do at home and really just wanted to ride the Kawasaki. Leaving Kingston took another crossing of the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge, which was fine. Sometimes I ride down 9W to Highland and cross the Mid Hudson Bridge into Poughkeepsie but I like the scenery off the KR Bridge in late afternoon so I opted for that. After another great ride home, the Kawasaki singing its four cylinder song the whole way, I pulled in with my mood lightened by the experience. More rides are coming and I can only hope the weather obliges for each of them as it did that night.

Scooter Run

March 27, 2024
The weather has been off and on for months now so a serious ride hasn't been in the cards. The occasional milk run or short hop around the neighborhood has been all I've been able to do. Except two weeks ago. The temperature had climbed into the sixties and the sun was shining brightly. I decided to free the CF Moto scooter and do a run towards Salt Point on the very pleasing local roads. Now I've been living here for almost eight years and was pretty sure I had most of the roads I usually d...

Welcome to 2024

February 24, 2024
I know it's been too long, but inspiration has been lacking. The weather this Winter has been wet and cold. So much so that my snow blower has been let loose from the garage three times already. Despite that I did actually get the opportunity in the beginning of February to ride twice at very short distances. In a strange coincidence it was both of my red riders who are the smallest vehicles in the class of the garage. The 250 Honda Nighthawk hit the daylight first for a short run into Town ...

2023 Wrap Up

November 8, 2023
Well, maybe a wrap up. If nothing else comes along. This was one heck of a year in some ways and a light ride in others. First, the biggie was the seven days in May/June at Americade. I spent a good amount of time riding the lake region with my longtime friend Marc and his sons totaling about 800 miles on the odometer of my thundering Kawasaki. We rode a guided ride to Whiteface Mountain, made numerous lunch and dinner runs and did a couple of hundred miles trying out the roads in the ver...

Gabe P. Hayes Ride 2023

October 17, 2023
This another ride I look forward to every year and this year was as good as ever. The event is to honor a Veteran who died of wounds received in Iraq. The organizers do a great job every year in all aspects of the event. The route they choose is always excellent, the food and entertainment at the finish is always worth the price of admission and the weather was perfect after a day of heavy rain. I decided to use the 250 Honda since the ride wasn't going to be climbing steep hills, something ...

A Family Weekend

September 21, 2023
Years ago, when we were younger, my brother Bill and I rode motorcycles together constantly. As we got older and moved to different places it stopped. We finally got together about three years ago to do a local event after almost 45 years of not having ridden together. This past weekend we got together and made a big weekend of it. On Saturday we hopped on our bikes to do a little warmup ride around the area so Bill could see the roads that I have been raving about for years.
What made it e...

The End Of Summer

September 6, 2023
I guess I'm partly to blame but it was a very quiet two wheeled summer. I only went to two Bike Nights and two motorcycle events this season. I thought that with the big adventure at Americade at the beginning of June that I would be spending a lot of time in the saddle. Instead weather, family commitments and unplanned events kept me from venturing out. I would do the occasional milk run or short ride around the neighborhood but mostly my bikes have been resting quietly in the garage. I'm h...

Another Suicide Prevention Ride

August 2, 2023
So far this season I have done two local events. Both were dedicated to suicide prevention. This one also started in Poughkeepsie at a local bar and I have done it a few times. I decided to take the Honda Nighthawk again since it is the lighter of the two motorcycles and does pretty well in a big ride for its size.
I got to the start about an hour early and watched the number of motorcycles arriving grow in number to a fairly well attended event. While American V-Twins predominated there we...

A Long Break

July 22, 2023
Yes, I know it's been a while since the last entry. I haven't done anything adventurous since the Americade rally so in this vein there has been little to report. Let's see if I can relate some of the short news.
When I went to Americade there was a key cutting enterprise present among the vendors and since I have only ever had one key for the Kawasaki I thought it would be prudent to have another made. There was one problem though. Despite all their best efforts they were unable to ma...
